Developer puzzled by Delhi Street residents’ outcry over tree removal – by Vik Kirsch

GUELPH — The tree canopy at a prominent historic property on Delhi Street was cut down last Friday, sur-prising and irking some neighbours and perplexing city staff.

“I’m outraged,” neighbour Sue Smith said Thursday, adding it’s another loss to the city’s tree cover and one she struggled to understand, believing they were to be saved during redevelopment of the site.

But developer Robert Eilers said 13 of the 14 of the largely maple, spruce and locust trees were decayed andposed as a danger, particularly after the winter ice storm. Three were split down the middle. He said the treeshad to come down, as recommended by Elmira professional arborist Mike Hayes.
